That certainly seems to be the case with a painting by indigenous artist Vincent Namatjira, which includes a portrait of Australia’s richest person, mining magnate Gina Rinehart. Rinehart has reportedly called for the National Gallery of Australia (NGA) to remove her portrait, one of 21 individual works that make up a single piece in Namatjira’s exhibition “Australia in Colour,” from display. The painting of Rinehart is one of 21 portraits by artist Vincent Namatjira that feature in his exhibition "Australia in Colour." Vincent NamatjiraAustralian media has reported that Rinehart approached the NGA’s director and chair to request the painting’s removal. She “remained unshakable” at the top of Forbes’ Australia’s 50 Richest list for 2024, the outlet reported in February.

The Protests Help Trump - The New York Times

These days, I think a lot about Donald Trump. When the monthly economic reports come out, I think: Will this help elect Donald Trump? In the 1960s, for example, millions of young people were moved to protest the war in Vietnam, and history has vindicated their position. In 1968, Richard Nixon celebrated the “forgotten Americans — the nonshouters; the nondemonstrators” and was elected to the presidency. Far from leading to a new progressive era, the uprisings of the era were followed by what was arguably the most conservative period in American history.

Not every corner of the plant-based food industry has been burned. After the boom-and-bust cycle of Beyond Meat stock, analysts have wondered what comes next for the plant-based food space. The alternative protein market Beyond Meat's struggles have left some skeptical about which companies have what it takes to meet the needs of consumers who want to avoid animal-based products for health or environmental reasons. After topping $230 per share at its highest point, Beyond Meat stock now trades below $7. There's a business argument beyond the alternative protein market that can bode well when forecasting demand, Morningstar's Goldstein said.

There's a new top dog when it comes to yields on 1-year certificates of deposit, according to an analysis by Stephens. Bread Financial now has the highest annual percentage yield for 1-year CDs among banks in Stephens' coverage at 5.6%. However, the online bank didn't reach the top by raising its APY. Instead, it was because LendingClub slashed its 1-year CD yield by 10 basis points to 5.55%, analyst Vincent Caintic said. "Online banks had already been cutting 1yr CD rates and this may likely continue as near-term rate expectations fall," Caintic said.

Stashing money in safe assets is paying off — and another bank has just hiked the yield it pays on a 1-year certificate of deposit. LendingClub bumped the annual percentage yield on its 1-year CD to 5.65%, an increase of 15 basis points. That places LendingClub's 1-year CD some 55 basis points above the median CD peer rate, according to an analysis by Stephens, and it makes the bank's offering the top-paying CD within Stephens' coverage. "Following the market now anticipating a higher for longer rate cycle, we've seen a reversal of the CD rate cuts initiated in September by a few of our online banks," he said. The upside of buying a CD is you get to lock in your rate for the duration of the time you hold the instrument.

Banks that hiked yields in the final stretch of the third quarter include Bread Financial , which is now offering an annual percentage yield of 5.6% for a 1-year CD. One basis point equals one-hundredth of a percentage point. "We expect at least one more guide up from bank management teams on deposit betas as the Fed keeps rates higher for longer," wrote Morgan Stanley analyst Betsy Graseck. Those factors include competition from money market funds for depositors' dollars, and lower-yielding CDs repricing at higher rates, she added. The San Francisco Fed forecast that the last of these dollars would be depleted during the third quarter of 2023.

Union Square Ventures is widely considered to be one of the top performing venture firms of all time. USV marked down seven of its funds by nearly 26% this year, a far steeper writedown than other firms. Union Square Ventures — an early backer of Robinhood, Coinbase, and Etsy— is widely considered to be one of the top performing venture firms of all time. Venture firms are required to value their holdings at fair market value, but assessing the value of illiquid assets leaves considerable room for discretion. Silicon Valley is bracing for what it fears will be an "extinction event" threatening the survival of hundreds of startups. Tom Loverro, a investor at 40-year-old Bay Area venture capital firm IVP, has been loudly warning for months on Twitter and in media interviews about a coming "mass extinction event" for startups. The total volume of venture capital investment into US startups has slumped for six consecutive quarters, according to data firm Pitchbook. Even a last-ditch slashing of the startup's prospective valuation — a "down-round," in Silicon Valley parlance — didn't whet investors' appetites. Over the past year, many startups that rely on Silicon Valley funding have been steeling themselves for the slowdown to avoid similar fates.

It melds elements of mystery and humanity with a dose of high drama as rescuers race against time in their frantic search for a missing vessel with five souls aboard. Should a missing tourism vessel for the ultra-wealthy take precedence over other consequential stories happening around the world? While the press took heat for around-the-clock coverage of MH370, the tragedy was arguably far more worthy of coverage. And yet, the disaster did not inspire a level of coverage close to what major news organizations have devoted to the ocean submersible. Eric Deggans, NPR’s media critic and an adjunct instructor at Duke University, conceded that the coverage of the Titanic vessel has perhaps been over-torqued in recent days.

REUTERS/Steve Parsons/Pool/File PhotoSYDNEY, April 23 (Reuters) - Australians have paid tribute to Barry Humphries, the comedian best known for his character Dame Edna Everage, as both a "one-of-a-kind" entertainer and a charming and intelligent man. The Sydney Morning Herald said Humphries died on Saturday at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney, where he had been treated for various health issues. Another Sydneysider, Lucy Bloom, said it felt like the character of Dame Edna would never come to an end. "Barry Humphries entertained us through a galaxy of personas, from Dame Edna to Sandy Stone.

April 22 (Reuters) - Barry Humphries, the comedian best known for his character Dame Edna Everage who blossomed from an Australian suburban housewife into a self-described gigastar, died on Saturday. The Sydney Morning Herald said Humphries died at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney, where he had been treated for various health issues. It was the character of Dame Edna who made Humphries famous. "Edna has this way of doing things, it seems to take the curse off it," Humphries told Reuters in 1998. That changed in 2000, when he was 66, and his "Dame Edna: The Royal Tour" on Broadway earned him a Tony award and role in the sitcom "Ally McBeal".
Tax refunds are smaller this year, which is bad news for consumers – but positive news for some lenders, according to Stephens. Tax Day looms, with federal income tax returns due on April 18. Smaller tax refunds – and reduced consumer bank balances – could bode well for a handful of unsecured lenders. "If we were to pick one, lower tax refunds are more positive for FirstCash," he said. OneMain Financial is another stock that Caintic highlighted as a potential beneficiary of lower tax refunds.
It may seem like second nature to hide out in cash during these volatile markets, but investors ought to snap up bonds while the getting's still good in yields, according to UBS. The central bank's policy tightening has had the upshot of boosting yields on bonds, certificates of deposit and other fixed-income instruments. "Cash deposits have become more appealing to many investors as central banks have tightened," wrote UBS strategist Vincent Heaney in a Thursday report. He noted that a balanced portfolio – one that's 60% allocated toward stocks and 40% allocated toward bonds – beats cash about 80% of the time over a five-year period. That's not to say that investors should redeploy all their cash into bonds immediately.
A Russian fighter jet collided with an American drone this week after harassing it. The collision was likely unintentional, and former US naval aviators say that it could point to problems with Russian fighter pilots. A State Department official said it "probably was the result of profound incompetence on the part of one of these Russian pilots." Russian military failures in Ukraine have altered this view, he continued, "and now, you've got something like this." Charles Larkin Sr./US Air Force via AP"The tactical portion here is that poor training or poor decision making by a Russian pilot caused a collision," Snodgrass said.
"It's going to take some time" for disinflation to spread through the economy, Powell said in a news conference following the Fed's latest quarter-point interest rate increase. He said he expects a couple more rate hikes still to go, and, "given our outlook, I just I don't see us cutting rates this year." Rate cuts, they expect, will start in September - a view Powell said Wednesday is driven by the expectation of fast-receding inflation. Since the 1990s, the interlude between rate hikes and rate cuts has varied from as long as 18 months in 1997-1998 to as short as five months in 1995. The Fed, Powell said Wednesday, cannot risk doing too little.

Chinese regulators approved the vaccine, produced by Chinese pharmaceutical firm CanSino Biologics (6185.HK), for use as a booster in September. His hospital is among those administering the new vaccine, which will be used as well as regular injected shots. The country has relied on domestically produced, inactivated shots and has yet to import, or introduce its own version, of an mRNA vaccine. Loh is hopeful that results from Shanghai's foray into inhaled vaccines will encourage other countries to follow suit. "I think inhaled vaccines for respiratory illness like COVID-19 will be the future," he said.
